Tell SCOTUS: Rein in Trump’s executive overreach

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller says that Trump is “actively looking at” suspending habeas corpus.

Habeas corpus is the long-standing American right to have your case heard before a judge and defend yourself against charges brought against you by the government.

It’s a clear move toward fascism—and an escalation of Trump’s attacks on immigrants and democratic rights. He’s already started arresting judges who block his agenda, and ICE has even threatened to arrest members of Congress.

Only Congress has the power to suspend habeas corpus, and the Supreme Court recently joined several federal judges in ruling that anyone detained in the United States has the right to defend themselves before a judge. But the Trump administration has indicated that they might unilaterally strip the right of habeas corpus anyway.

The writ of habeas corpus goes back centuries, and can only be suspended in times of insurrection or invasion—neither of which are happening.

It’s clear that Trump wants to rip apart checks and balances and consolidate power for himself. The Supreme Court must step in and stop Trump’s executive overreach.

Presidents don’t get to step over Congress and the Supreme Court to lock up their enemies and throw away the key.

Tell the Supreme Court: Stand up for basic American rights. Rein in Trump’s executive overreach as he openly considers unilaterally suspending the writ of habeas corpus.
