The petition to Senator Joe Manchin reads:
“Stop standing in the way of the Democratic Party’s agenda. Support filibuster reform now!”

Everyone knows it only takes a 51% majority to pass legislation in the House. But in the Senate, any bill can be delayed or killed with a filibuster unless there is a 60% majority. That means Republicans and conservative Democrats have the power to block any legislation, putting President Biden’s entire agenda at risk.

In order to create real lasting change on any of the issues President Biden prioritized during his campaign, the filibuster must go.

Recently Manchin suggested that he was open to reforming the filibuster, a senate rule that requires a 60 rather than 51% majority vote in the upper house, to pass most legislation. His support for filibuster reform would be groundbreaking and make the chances of passing a host of bills from police and voting reform to clean energy policies much more likely.

Americans sent democrats to Washington for a reason: The majority of the country wants progressive change. But that cannot happen when a small group of senators can torpedo any chances of such legislation passing. That’s why it is so important that democrats remove the barrier to majority rule by getting rid of the filibuster. Joe Manchin is currently one of the biggest obstacles to doing so.
