The EJSCREEN system was created under the Obama administration to identify and map communities with higher environmental vulnerabilities and burdens.

Without this program, we don’t know which community is in greatest need. Lawmakers won’t make the right policies. And in fact, could make policies that harm those communities or at the very least, don’t help.

Maps may seem wonky, but they are an essential tool for policymakers who want to fight environmental degradation and racial inequality. When used well, they can empower social movements pushing for justice.
