We, UK-based Israeli citizens, call on the UK to ban all trade in goods and services with the Israeli settlements in the illegally Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), including East Jerusalem. Such a ban, while far from sufficient on its own, would be an impactful rejection of Israel’s complicity in the settlers’ extreme violence, and a positive step towards upholding international law and recognising Palestine sovereignty.
For decades the UK has viewed Israeli settlements in the OPT as illegal. The official business advice discourages trade and investment in them. However, this policy permits trade with settlements, and therefore does not fulfil Britain’s legal and moral obligations as a high Contracting Party to the Geneva Convention. These longstanding obligations were reiterated in July 2024 when the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concluded that Israel’s prolonged occupation, settlement expansion, and annexation measures in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) — including East Jerusalem — constitute serious breaches of international law. The Court reaffirmed that all states have a duty of non-recognition and non-assistance toward these unlawful situations and must act to bring them to an end.
Settler violence in the West Bank has risen to unparalleled peaks, as has the number of communities forced off their lands by Israeli policies. In occupied East Jerusalem over 2,000 Palestinian residents of Silwan face dispossession within a 500-meter radius of Al Aqsa/Temple Mount. The UK has so far failed to take effective action to halt these aggressions. The minimum it can do is protect its citizens from supporting them financially through our markets. Without such a ban the UK's official recognition of the State of Palestine in September 2025, remains purely symbolic.
Attempts to displace Palestinians are not the work of a few ‘rotten apples’ but a systemic approach taken by the Israeli parliament, government, army, and judicial systems who work hand in glove with the settler movement. Several Human Rights organisations have concluded that these policies amount to Apartheid and Ethnic Cleansing. Responsible too are businesses and industries that operate in the West Bank in violation of international law.
The British government has the power to ban all trade in settlement goods and services. However, successive governments have failed to act on this moral and legal obligation. We call on the current government to finally stop aiding and abetting Apartheid and Ethnic Cleansing by issuing a ban on all trade with the settlements. We also call on our representatives in parliament to suggest legislation that outlaws trade with these illegal, abhorrent, settlements.
