THE RIGHT TO FORM A UNION IS UNDER ATTACK

The rights of working people to form a union are under attack. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is proposing a new rule that would limit the ability for workers and union representatives to communicate effectively when a union election is scheduled. This will make the process to form a union LESS democratic. Who is pushing for this change? Notoriously anti-union organizations like the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. are claiming that sharing phone numbers and e-mails with the union violates workers’ privacy.

It is very important that the NLRB receives as many comments as possible on the rule from different people in their own words during the public comment period. We ask you to submit a brief but important comment to the NLRB as soon as possible.

Here is what the proposed rule would do:

·         Make it difficult or potentially impossible for ALL eligible workers in a bargaining unit to receive timely information from the union through phone or email channels, thereby limiting workers’ ability to get questions answered in a timely manner before a vote.

·         Allow bosses to withhold email addresses and phone numbers of eligible bargaining unit workers during the period leading up to a union election.

·         Allow the employer to continue to call and email workers with anti-union messages when they are not at work.

Currently, eligible voter email addresses and phone numbers are shared with union representatives when workers have signed cards to petition for an election, and strict rules of use and privacy are already enforced. This is to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote receives information from both sides. The right to free speech and fair elections will be damaged by this rule, but it won’t stop the bosses from invading workers’ non-work hours. This is the 21st century, and the government should not try to make it harder for working people to connect with union representatives by phone and email.
