The time has come for a universal basic income. Let's get Labour on board.
We’re working to lay the foundation with people, with civil society organisations, with policy-makers, with academics, with journalists, with councillors, Mayors, and MPs, but we still don’t have a commitment to pilot a basic income from the party it would benefit most - the Labour Party.
Welsh Labour is running a pilot. Andy Burnham has called for one in Greater Manchester, building on the 33 councils around the UK that have passed motions supporting pilots in their area.12 of those were proposed by Labour. UBI is a policy that offers the single biggest improvement in workers’ interests since the National Minimum Wage. This is the future of the Labour Party.
We know that the majority of British voters support a UBI, by a 20-point margin. That margin rises to a 52-point majority among Labour voters.
Our research shows that specifically in Labour’s former heartlands that it needs to regain for a successful election, support is extremely high. Our research also explicitly lays out tried and tested narratives to frame UBI that boost support, even among opponents.
UBI is a vote winner. UBI is affordable. It’s time to see this policy in manifestos. Here's how to get involved.
