TO UW System Board of Regents:
UW System Administration has proposed a rigid, one-size-fits-all general education program for all UW campuses. In spite of any claims to the contrary, Act 15 does not mandate such a curriculum; it only requires that UW campuses establish policies to transfer credits between UW institutions. This effort by System Administration ignores state law, which charges campus chancellors, with consultation of the faculty, to design curricula; tramples on academic freedom; and hurts our students’ right to learn.
We, the undersigned, urge the Board of Regents to stand up for our students, the academic freedom of faculty and staff, and the autonomy of our campuses and vote against this proposal, and instead simply issue a straightforward policy requiring General Education credits taken at any UW institution to be accepted at any other UW institution.
