Repeal the dangerous ban on masks and vaccine requirements
Let's work together to protect Texas children
Physicians across Texas are gravely concerned about children in our state and their risk of COVID-19 infections. As the virus burns through Texas, health care providers feel we are fighting this fire without any leadership from Gov. Greg Abbott. Blocking schools from making local decisions to protect themselves with his top-down, one-size-fits-all edict will only make matters worse.
Gov. Abbotts’ executive order prohibiting local school districts from implementing COVID-19 safeguards exposes every child to a virus that is deadlier than the flu, as contagious as smallpox, and preventable with two basic mitigation measures: Mask use and vaccinations. With schools resuming and children returning to classrooms, Gov. Abbott’s anti-safety strategy puts people at risk, including children.
COVID-19 is ravaging Texas. For the first time in six months, more than 10,000 Texans are hospitalized. Hospitals are running out of beds, including children’s hospitals. The situation is so dire that Texas has to beg other states to provide resources. The reason: Cases and hospitalizations are rising too fast. And the responsibility for this sharp spike in infection rates and sickness belongs to Gov. Abbott when he turned his back on science- and evidence-based safety measures that could reduce infections and slow the spread of COVID-19.
In addition to actively opposing masks, Gov. Abbott also outlawed strategies that could protect more people with vaccinations, including banning private businesses, schools, and local communities from requiring vaccinations to protect customers, constituents, and kids. Instead of getting more people vaccinated, Gov. Abbott is an obstruction, and his reckless policy will cost lives: Of 8,787 Texans who died from COVID-19 between February and July, nearly all of them -- 8,744 -- were not vaccinated, for a rate of 99.5 percent.
Compounding the already low vaccination rate, Texas children younger than 12 are not eligible to be vaccinated. The only protection they have is to wear a mask, and for everyone around them to wear one too. With vaccinations lagging and universal masks prohibited, Gov. Abbott is exposing more than 2.5 million Texas children in Pre-K to 5th-grade to COVID-19.
To protect the health of vulnerable Texans, we are calling on Gov. Abbott to do the following immediately:
Gov. Abbott must repeal his reckless executive order and allow and encourage local school districts to implement safeguards that can minimize COVID-19 spread such as mask-wearing and vaccinations.
He must repeal his prohibition against local schools and private businesses requiring vaccinations.
Gov. Abbott must do more to get Texans vaccinated, including encouraging every eligible Texan to get vaccinated and making vaccinations easier, including in local schools.
Shots in arms are only part of an effective safety strategy. For children ineligible for a vaccine, the only protection they have against COVID-19 is for them to wear a mask, and for those around them to do the same. As physicians, we agree with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation that all schools have students, staff, and teachers wear masks, which scientific evidence shows reduces COVID-19 spread.
It’s heartbreaking and infuriating for us as doctors to watch children needlessly suffer while Gov. Abbott rejects simple protections such as masks and vaccinations.
Asking local schools and communities to look the other way while COVID-19 tears through our communities won’t protect kids. Waving the flag of “personal choice,” as Gov. Abbott does, even as those choices endanger the lives of others only robs millions of Texans of the freedom to eat out, be with their loved ones, and, yes, learn in schools safely.
Enough is enough. Texas needs to mask up, get vaccinated, and a governor willing to lead and protect our kids.
