UO Student Workers Bargaining Support Pledge
UOSW is the student worker union at the University of Oregon (UO), representing all student workers and other employees not in other campus unions (excluding office administrators). They have been bargaining with UO to win a fair contract since May 2024. A fair contract for student workers is one that would ensure a livable wage, protection from harassment in the workplace and give student workers a timely pay period (which complies with Oregon Law, as per Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industry).
The UO administration has repeatedly hindered the bargaining process by either rejecting the UOSW''s fair demands or stalling the return of counter-proposals to these demands.
As UO students and workers, we understand the value of student worker labor. Our student workers cannot simply be replaced because our university requires their labor to run our dining halls, dorms, rec center, libraries, coffee outlets, tech support, classrooms and more. That work cannot and should not be passed onto faculty members, staff, grad educators or other workers on campus. The UO must invest seriously in fair wages and workplace standards for their student workers.
The UOSW Union will be better equipped to win their demands if they receive a critical mass of support from other members of UO’s campus. This solidarity pledge from UO Young Democratic Socialists of America (UOYDSA) is a commitment of your support for the UOSW and their demands.
Student worker working conditions are our learning conditions, and we will not undermine the collective power of student workers to demand necessary changes to those working conditions.
