What would a basic income for farmers and crofters in Scotland look like?

Basic Income 4 Farmers (Scotland) is a project co-ordinated by Basic Income 4 Farmers, the Regenerative Farming Network and the Landworkers' Alliance. We think a basic income could support and transform Scotland's agricultural sector, and are working to develop a policy proposal to help examine this and move the debate forward.

To inform this policy proposal we are talking to people who have experience of producing food in Scotland. We are hosting three in person workshops in January 2026 and a shorter online session:

  • Monday, 26th January: Rainton Farm, nr Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries and Galloway 10.00am - 4.30pm
  • Tuesday, 27th January: Guardswell Farm, Kinnaird, Inchture, Perth and Kinross 10.00am - 4.30pm
  • Thursday, 29th January: Dingwall Community Centre, Dingwall, Scottish Highlands 10.00am - 4.30pm
  • Online: if you can't make an in person session complete the form and we'll send you details of the online workshop in due course
We'd love to hear your views, and have a lot to talk about:
  • Do you support the idea of a basic income for farmers?
  • What difference would it make for you?
  • Who should be eligible and what amount should recipients be paid?
  • What concerns or worries need addressing?
  • How might a basic income sit within existing and future policy frameworks?

We understand we're all busy people, but really hope you can join us for what should be an invigorating day of discussion and visioning to start the year.

No in-depth knowledge is required, just your enthusiasm, experience and ideas. Please do join us.
