President Trump has directed the U.S. Department of the Interior to review whether gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves should be removed from protections under the Endangered Species Act.

This action does not immediately delist federally protected wolves — but it puts their federal protections at risk.

Gray wolves are still recovering across portions of their historic range, and Mexican gray wolves are separately listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Removing federal protections could jeopardize decades of recovery efforts and leave wolves increasingly vulnerable to state laws and management policies that allow aggressive hunting and trapping.

The next steps now fall to the Department of the Interior, led by Secretary Doug Burgum.
