Michigan Medical Professionals Urge Voters to Vote Yes on Prop 3
Michigan health care professionals care deeply for the health, safety, and well-being of our patients. We have dedicated our careers and lives to providing evidence-based care, delivered with quality, safety, integrity, and compassion. We need to be able to provide that care to patients without interference from politicians.
We sit with our patients and talk through all their medical options because they deserve the freedom to decide the best reproductive care in consultation with medical providers they trust. Every patient deserves access to the full range of evidence-based reproductive medical care.
Pregnancy affects a person’s vital organs – their heart, lungs, kidneys, vascular system — in significant ways. During a pregnancy, anything can happen to a patient, including serious medical complications such as placental abruption, dangerous infections, blood loss and severe preeclampsia, which can all endanger a woman’s life. Parents who eagerly await the arrival of a new child may also experience the heartbreak of learning that their fetus has a fatal chromosomal abnormality, and that terminating the pregnancy is a compassionate option. Victims of rape and incest, including very young victims whose bodies are not physiologically developed enough to carry a pregnancy, must be allowed all options for care.
These are just some of the many situations we see in our exam rooms, clinics and hospitals. Proposal 3 will keep us from going back to the 1931 law that bans most abortions and other pregnancy-related treatment options. Health care professionals and our teams across our state must be able to treat our patients with all the procedures medically necessary to serve them, without interference from the government or fear of prosecution of our patients or our staff.
For these reasons, major professional medical organizations from the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to the American College of Family Physicians and the American College of Nurse Midwives support abortion access as part of standard medical care.
Every patient is unique and deserves care that meets their personal, individual needs. Proposal 3 keeps the reproductive rights that Michigan women have had for nearly 50 years and ensures that these health care decisions are made between health care professionals and patients. And that is as it should be.
Signatories will join over 1,500 medical professionals in Michigan who have already added their name in support of the Reproductive Freedom for All ballot initiative.Signed:
