Cleaners at City University are suffering from low pay, high workloads and poor conditions stemming from outsourcing.
These are workers who are predominantly people of colour, women and migrants, who have historically suffered from bullying and abuse in their workplace.
Following months of campaigning, including two protests supported by multiple trade unions and MPs Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell, members of the IWGB working as cleaners at City University have voted unanimously to take strike action.
They are calling on management to bring them in-house and put an end to the crippling overwork and low pay they are suffering at the hands of City’s subcontractor Julius Rutherfoord. Their specific demands include a pay rise to £16, additional antisocial hours payment for working the night shift, an end to overwork, and union recognition.
These heroic cleaners are low-paid workers, and it can be a struggle to sustain lengthy strike action. That's why we are raising this strike hardship fund to help them get by through our strike.
Some funds may also be used for campaign expenses where members decide democratically to do so. Any funds that aren't used as part of this campaign will be transferred to the IWGB Universities branch fighting fund for future campaigns and organising.
