GECAN's Purposes
- to promote community awareness of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions from within the City of Glen Eira and the broader community,
- to initiate and promote greenhouse gas emission reductions, and to achieve emission reductions at least as ambitious as the targets adopted by Glen Eira Council on 5 May 2020,
- to promote biodiversity, sustainable living and amelioration of the impacts of climate change in Glen Eira and beyond, and
- to procure funding from appropriate sources for use in the above purposes.
About GECAN
GECAN started in a Carnegie loungeroom in January of 2020 and from there a campaign for the local council, Glen Eira, to declare a climate emergency. A good deal of work was being done behind the scenes at Council, and with help from our campaign and petition mobilising the community, the Councillors declared a climate emergency in May of 2020.
We're continuing our engagement with council and the community by reviewing Council strategies and plans, making submissions, watching out for trees and our precious green spaces, and letting people in our network know when they need to take action!
GECAN is incorporated!
In 2021 when we decided to incorporate it was important to set up a good foundation and guiding principles, enable our group to establish itself and take stronger action. We elected a committee, and now we are calling for more members. Having members means we can cover our (minimal) costs and better 'engage' with our community. This means getting critical information to our members, asking for help when we need it, and taking climate actions that our members think are important.
We need to have third-party insurance to cover any events or actions in public. Membership fees help us to pay for insurance and cover other (small) running costs.
You can join us!
GECAN is a network and is nothing without its members. Joining GECAN means you'll be connected to a community of like-minded local people who care as much as you do about the planet, the living beings it supports and all of our futures. Being connected makes us stronger, and we need to build community and resilience to take climate action and to prepare for the future.
By joining GECAN you'll get:
- invitations to our monthly meetings,
- our email newsletters (no spam, promise!),
- to join online conversations with other members (Google Groups and Facebook Groups)
- involved with our local actions
- to vote at our AGM
- to nominate to be on the GECAN committee
To join you need to complete a membership application form and pay a membership fee. The fee is $10 for wage-earners and $5 for non-earners, with fees waived for First Nations people and those who cannot afford the fee.
The joining fee includes the annual fees for the first year (e.g. 2021-2022). Annual fees will be set at each AGM.
