It has been a crazy 2020! We hope you are all staying safe in these trying times. Although we know everybody’s priorities have shifted in the past two months, it is important to remember that one public health crisis doesn’t end when another begins.
We started out 2020 by sleeping overnight in the Virginia Capitol Building so as to safely lobby for laws that will help to prevent gun violence. We did this to ensure the safety of our members, as the thousands of pro-gun advocates that rallied outside of the building also claimed some white supremacists who threatened violence. Fortunately, all of our volunteers were safe and we were also able to hold a very powerful vigil outside of NRA headquarters to honor those lost to gun violence.
In February, we occupied Senator Mitch McConnell’s office. We successfully sat in Senator McConnell's office for around an hour, allowing many people to share their stories about how they have been affected by gun violence and why we need these gun control bills to see action within the Senate.
Although our ability to show up for in-person protests and demonstrations is gone, we are still keeping this movement alive through OurPower Hubs all around the country and we will even be holding virtual lobbying days. We are staying connected and continuing to fight for our lives even as quarantine has caused people to start stockpiling weapons. Our fight is nowhere near over.
If you are financially able, please consider donating to March For Our Lives DC to help us keep our movement strong and ensure that we will be able to jump right back in once all of this chaos fades. If you are unable, help us spread the word by forwarding this email to friends!
Stay strong, stay passionate, stay safe.
