Fifty years ago, a team of artists led by John Pitman Weber and Jose Guerrero created the “Solidarity” mural in the lobby of the UE Hall in Chicago, at that time the center of a vibrant working-class neighborhood.
With the neighborhood gentrifying, UE sold the aging building in 2024. We raised enough money to remove and save the walls containing the most important parts of the mural, and are on track to re-install portions of the mural at our new Chicago home in the Chicago Teachers Union building and at the UE Local 506 hall in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The original lead muralist John Pitman Weber has agreed to recreate those portions that could not be saved or conserved — but we need to raise funds to finish the restoration, installation and transportation.
