"Money kept them in, Black love got them out!"
-Pat Hussein, Black Mamas Bailout
Spending just a few days in jail can result in the loss of housing, jobs, and even custody of children. Cash bail criminalizes poverty, perpetuating inequities in the justice system that disproportionately impact Black people.
On Valentine's Day in 2021, the Free Atlanta Abolition Movement (FAAM) began its work of freeing Black people in the city of Atlanta and Fulton County. We are on a journey to free 100+ Black people through our Black-run abolition foundation, and so far we have freed SEVEN Black Atlantans.
Today, we come with a specific ask -- support us in freeing Black people from cages!
“Abolition is about presence, not absence. It’s about building life-affirming institutions." – Ruth Wilson Gilmore
The Free Atlanta Abolition Movement is a collective of Black organizers who are committed to building a community based movement to abolish the prison industrial complex by using tactical bail outs to free our people from cages and aid in the stabilization of community members upon release. Guided by the lived experiences of formerly-incarcerated folx, FAAM works to free our people from cages and to resource a network of healing, legal & mutual aid as we organize to build alternative futures for ourselves and our communities. We are Atlanta’s first and only Black autonomous bail fund!
