The prolonged federal government shutdown means that SNAP (food stamps) and other essential programming will stop in November. Food stamps will not be paid out. This will impact ~1,400 households in Gallatin County, many of whom are already struggling to pay rent and utilities, life-saving medication, and put food on the table for families.
At this time, there is no end in sight to the government shutdown. The latest reporting suggests that it could last into the new year. On Sunday October 26, Bozeman Tenants United convened our membership to assess the impact of the shutdown on our members, Our members -- many of whom are recipients of federal programs like SNAP - shared urgent and escalating needs.
But we have a union. And we got us. WE FEED US. BTU will launch a short-term grocery distribution to union members, starting with members of majority-union apartment building and mobile home park chapters, and our citywide membership. We will assess our capacity on week one and consider our ability to expand beyond that as we can, and as needed.
Our goal is to contribute to food stability for the duration of the government shutdown.
WE FEED US will involve:
Weekly grocery box pick up for City-Wide membership (pickup location pending)
Weekly grocery boxes delivered to properties where we have majority unions (King Arthur Park, Mountain Meadows, Bridger Heights, Bridger Peaks, Rose Park Plaza
If you are NOT currently food-insecure, please contribute what you can to support the Free Grocery program! All donations will go towards purchasing groceries.
