Can you spare some money to support Yorkshire CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament)?
This year we have supported and taken part in many local and national protests. This includes the regular marches against the war in Gaza; organising a number of street stalls and meetings, including a Peace History Conference; and we held events such as the Peace & Crafts Fair.
We have also supported local youth campaigners and helped them to have a presence at international events such as the Meeting of the State Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear weapons (TPNW). Closer to home, we have developed a working relationship with Leeds Beckett University to arrange student social media volunteers and are gaining support for the TPNW from councillors, MPs, and other public figures across the region. We also recently updated our website, to make it more user and mobile-friendly.
Our campaign has never been more important, with the Doomsday Clock the closest we’ve ever been. The Doomsday Clock is set once a year by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making, factoring in climate change and growing nuclear tensions. From the return of US nukes to UK soil at Lakenheath to nuclear capable fighter jets at Marham, we are living in dangerous times. On top of that is the increased military spending, the soaring costs of Trident replacement, and wars across the globe. The money used to threaten humanity with nuclear extinction could be used instead to develop a sustainable future, invest in public infrastructure/services, and develop a culture of peace.
It is essential that we continue our campaign to put pressure on the UK government for a more peaceful agenda and a world without nuclear weapons. We want to reach relevant groups and individuals, however, the costs of running events, an office and staff salaries have all increased.
To improve our basic income, we have increased membership subscription rates but more is needed (especially since we will not get any festival income in 2026 from Glastonbury). If you can make a donation (either a one-off or a standing order) to help our finances, this would make a big difference. Our target amount is £2000 and suggested donation amounts are: £5, £10, £20, £50 or £100. However, any amounts are gratefully received. If you would prefer to pay through another way, you can make payments directly to our bank account or via the post (please get in touch for these details - info@yorkshirecnd.org.uk).
