2018 - Lois Herr for PA Senate 48

Lois Herr has spent a lifetime fighting for the values we share as Democrats, defending women’s rights, and expanding opportunities for women in business and politics.

Currently, Lois serves both the Democratic Party and her community as the Chair of the Lebanon County Democratic Committee and as a member of Mt. Gretna Boro Council.

Over the years, Herr has focused on supporting progressive women candidates who are working to solve problems, improve our quality of life, and defend rights and opportunities for women. Fighting for women has been a consistent thread through Herr’s business, education, and volunteer activities.

Herr succeeded in business, education, and government, using her ability to bring people together to solve problems, managing the people who run the telephone central offices, paving the way to bring women into phone company management in the 70s, getting New Yorkers and New Englanders to agree on policies and practices, and getting developers and preservationists in Lancaster County to see the need for a rural growth strategy.

In her work with Bell Telephone Laboratories, AT&T, New York Telephone, and NYNEX, she learned to manage marketing, operations, finance, corporate planning, and publications. She spent 1974-75 in the White House Office of Management and Budget as a Presidential Interexchange Executive.

Later, Herr would own and operate a small farm in Lancaster County, restoring her 1800s home. Equally comfortable in the city or on the farm, she next proved herself in higher education back home at Elizabethtown College, where she taught marketing, served as the college’s Director of Marketing and Public Affairs, and was a Scholar-in-Residence. Herr has authored three books: Women, Power, and AT&T: Winning Rights in the Workplace, Dear Coach: Letters Home from World War II, and Dear Woman of My Dreams. Along the way, Herr served on corporate, civic and service organization boards, led her local Rotary Club as President, chaired the Lancaster County Planning Commission, and was on the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners.

Politically, Herr served as Executive Director of the Lancaster County Democratic Committee in 2007-08, was a delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, and ran for Congress (PA-16) in 2004, 2006, and 2010.

Herr holds an MBA from Fordham University, an MA from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from Elizabethtown College.
