There's currently only ONE way to safely cross the Ashley River between downtown and West Ashley, and that is by car.

In July 2019, the City of Charleston submitted — for the 3rd consecutive year — a federal grant application (BUILD) to fund a standalone bicycle and pedestrian bridge across the Ashley River between downtown and West Ashley (south of the existing Legare Bridge). This facility would provide a vital connection between our major employment centers, highest residential areas, and unique greenspaces, while protecting the most vulnerable users of our roadways. Job and housing security, as well as public safety, depends upon it.

Our Senators and Representatives need to hear from you that this is a top priority, by urging them to express their support to USDOT Secretary Chao. We have until November 2019 to mobilize!
