CAN UCLA
CANUCLA (Climate Action Now, UCLA!)
We are grassroots climate action committee, composed of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. UCLA can and should be a leader in environmental issues. We want the UCLA administration to move much faster on climate change and climate justice issues. Please join us! We need your help to try to save the planet!
Along with the UCGND and CCN, we ask to:
1. Decarbonize our campuses → Innovate and lead on climate solutions
2. Dissociate from Big Oil → Invite relationships with frontline communities
3. Divest from fossil fuels → Invest in environmental justice initiatives
The UN IPCC’s (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) climate report is a code red for humanity. The emission of fossil fuel is irreversibly damaging our planet. The damage will be greatest for poor, communities of color. We must all do our part to reduce it!
UCLA leads the UCs in fossil fuel emissions, which have changed little over time (graph from https://electrifyuc.org/):
The recently released UCLA Sustainability Plan (https://sustain.ucla.edu/plan) is full of great ideas and plans. However, UCLA needs to move much faster with electrification, climate justice, and a just transition to green, unionized jobs at fair wages. The Sustainability Plan continues to rely on carbon offsets and the co-generation plant that is a major source of emissions. The use of a percentage of biogas instead of fracked methane at the co-generation plant, as the Sustainability Plan suggests, will not greatly reduce emissions. The continued use of carbon offsets allows fossil fuel use to continue, which damages the planet with disproportionate impact on communities of color and low-income neighborhoods that are more frequently located near extraction and refining sites.
