We aim to make Weston a Fairtrade Town.
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Learn much more about the impact of Fairtrade on the lives of 1.66 million farmer and workers here.
Think globally, act locally
With Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With simple shopping choices you can get farmers a better deal. And that means they can make their own decisions, control their future and lead the dignified life everyone deserves.
Fairtrade have a vision: a world in which all producers can enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfill their potential and decide on their future.
We want to join the mission to connect disadvantaged farmers and workers with consumers, promote fairer trading conditions and empower farmers and workers to combat poverty, strengthen their position and take more control over their lives.
Working to make Weston a Fairtrade Town is our way to join the mission and make it happen.
The Five Fair Trade Town Goals
1. Weston Town Council passes a Resolution supporting Fair Trade and agreeing to use Fair Trade products.
2. Fair Trade products are readily available in Weston's shops & served in local cafes, catering and hospitality establishments.
3. Fair Trade products are used by a number of local work places & community organisations (faith groups, schools, universities etc).
4. Media coverage & popular support for the campaign evidenced.
5. A local Fair Trade steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fair Trade Town status.
Get involved
Weston becoming a Fairtrade Town should be a careful commitment. We are in no rush to tick boxes, nor to race to complete the process. Make time to learn, and to spread awareness of the ways we can improve lives. We can cultivate the hope our community can bring.
We have seen Overseas Aid cut back. Signs of a Self-Preservation society are growing. Contact us to help in an audit of Fair Trade goods in our local shops. Or, to encourage our Weston and North Somerset Councils to take our that first step; to pass a firm resolution supporting the ethical values central to the Fairtrade Foundation.
