The Freelance Musicians Association is the AFM's dedicated community for independent musicians. Members meet on the first Wednesday of every month to network and drive action on crucial issues.

Work includes expanding the Fair Trade Music program, advocating legislatively for the protection of recorded music, digital rights, and royalty payments, and organizing efforts at specific venues, companies, and among music educators. The FMA focuses on securing better pay, health insurance, contract protection/enforcement, and travel assistance.
