Help Our Sister Heather

Atlanta, GA

Heather Lyn Brown (a mother, daughter, and beloved sister) disappeared without a trace in Alabama 11 years ago. Amazingly, she has recently been found in Canada. Heather had been living in hiding because she believed her life was in danger.

This year, evidence from 2004 was uncovered that completely changed what our assumptions had previously been. This evidence may expose a deep level of corruption across all levels of law enforcement in Dothan. A transcript between Heather and a homicide investigator shows that she was coerced by authorities into planting drugs on suspects in order for them to obtain illegal search warrants. It also shows that her boyfriend at the time, who is currently serving a life sentence for murder, was not present at the murder, but was with Heather in Florida. If this transcript is real, there is a man serving a life sentence for a crime that he did not commit, and there is motive to make sure that Heather is unable to testify against these individuals in any of the upcoming hearings.

Now we are afraid for Heather’s life. Our family spent thousands on our investigation and on an immigration lawyer in Canada to try to slow down her deportation. She has been deported and is currently in a jail in Washington State awaiting extradition back to Houston County, Alabama. We are doing everything we can to stop the process of her being sent back and put into the custody of this corrupt city/county. Right now we need help raising funds to pay for a good lawyer that could have her case transferred to a different county. Her legal fees are apt to be very expensive. Any amount helps!

We also need help creating awareness around Heather's case!

Here is what we know so far about the case:
-Heather is one of several women that claim they were repeatedly sexually assaulted by an officer involved with the drug task force in Dothan.

-Heather was interrogated by a Houston County Deputy on November 22, 2004. The transcript shows that the deputy confirmed he knew that Heather and her boyfriend James Bailey were in Florida at the time of the murder. The deputy asked Heather to plant chemicals at their home so he could bring James in for questioning to find out what he knew about the murder. She agreed. This document also states that she was asked on a number of occasions by different drug task force officers to do this same thing. She named these officers as well.

- A document from the D.A.’s office advised the investigator to remove this transcript and tape from the "official" investigation because it “is investigator work product, and not part of the investigation.” In addition, the document advised the officer to arrest Heather. She was arrested the next day.

- James and Heather were arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine (the same meth that she was asked to plant in their house by the officer).

-While in jail, James was charged with capital murder. His attorney indicated that the fact that James had an alibi was never allowed as evidence during the trial. His attorney also shared with the family that a witness verifying Heather’s and James’ whereabouts during the murder was never allowed to testify. James was convicted of capital murder by a jury
