Immigration, Refugees, and Asylum Group

We haven't heard about many immigrants out on the streets protesting Trump's Executive Orders. Why? Immigrants are staying close to home. They’re afraid to be noticed, wary of what will happen when they drop their children off at school, when they're at work, at an event, driving etc., etc,.

Fact: immigrants have a right to remain silent, and a warrant with a judge's signature and specific names must be presented in order for ICE agents to arrest and detain. However, 80%* of those arrested and detained were not informed of their rights NOR did they know they didn't have to allow ICE agents in UNLESS THEY HAVE AND CAN SHOW THE WARRANT. . . sliding the paper under the door.

These two reasons have brought the I, R, and A Group of East Bay OFA to act in direct communication and support of immigrants by:

  • Spreading the word of immigrant rights and due rights procedures--to immigrants themselves as well as to those who employ them.
  • Circulating documents to help immigrants make family plans so that their children are not abandoned, and they have made the arrangements necessary to fight deportation through the legal system.
  • Planning an EVENT where immigrants can speak to lawyers and get a sense of what they can do to enhance their particular situations (We've tentatively scheduled the event for Sat., May 13 in East Oakland and are recruiting bilingual and English-only lawyers, bilingual translators, and other "movers and shakers" to join the effort.)
  • The I, R & A team wants to reach out to the Muslim community and is looking for Arabic and Farsi speakers who will help us make those connections.
  • We're open to hearing your ideas on how to support immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers in new ways.

We'll update information on SB54 which made it out of the Appropriations Committee, and will soon be coming to the Senate floor for a vote.

YOU CAN HELP! The Immigration, Refugee, and Asylum group needs woman and man power.
