Indivisible ReSisters Contra Costa, founded in January 2017, is a California progressive grassroots activist group with a current membership of over 700 and growing. The Steering Committee meets weekly at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays to brainstorm, discuss, and share ideas, information, and resources, and plan action to build and strengthen our democracy and a just society. Member meetings are one Sunday a month.
We are part of national Indivisible, Indivisible California State Strong, and a network of thousands of local Indivisible chapters across the country that launched after the 2016 election, to hold our members of Congress accountable for representing our needs and values. Indivisible chapters focus on building a vibrant, participatory democracy and a better future for everyone.
As an Indivisible group we commit to these four principles:
Remake our democracy.
We recognize our democracy was rigged from the start in favor of the white and wealthy. We work to realize a shared vision of a real democracy — of, by, and for the people.
Embrace progressive values.
We strive to model inclusion, respect, and fairness in our actions. We study our history and prioritize repair of harm that will allow us to build an inclusive democracy. We do not accept the status quo, we constantly work for progress.
Coordinate and collaborate.
We partner with other Indivisible groups on advocacy, elections, and national Indivisible campaigns. We also affiliate with many local non-profit groups to amplify calls to action and magnify our impact.
Build a strong and strategic movement.
We focus on winning progressive policy victories and mobilizing our collective power at the local, state, and federal level.
Examples of actions by Indivisible ReSisters Contra Costa include:
- Helping to lead phone banking, texting, postcard writing, and canvassing activities, to support the election of progressive candidates at local, county, state and federal levels
- Planning and leading local rallies to denounce anti-Asian hatred and to champion federal voting rights legislation (among others)
- Advocating for progressive policies at local, county, state, and federal levels to support immigration reform, campaign finance reform, universal healthcare, racial justice, and the fight to protect our environment
We are a rapid-response infrastructure, a resource hub, a think tank, a disseminator of information, a connector between people and groups, an incubator for ideas, a forum for challenging conversations, and a navigator for each other and the broader community. We grapple with changing local, national, and global circumstances, threats to democracy, life, and freedom, different viewpoints and worldviews, our own passions and capacity, and our roles as individuals and as a group in working toward positive change.
