Kingston Independent Residents Group

The Kingston Independent Residents Group (KIRG) was founded by local people who care deeply about our borough and want a stronger, independent voice for Kingston upon Thames. We believe that local issues should be decided by local residents, not dictated by national party whips or Westminster agendas.

Across our communities, people share a simple belief: Kingston deserves better.

That’s why the Kingston Independents are working hard every day to make our council more open, fair, and focused on residents’ real priorities. We’re now the official opposition on Kingston Council - with twice as many councillors as the Kingston Conservatives - proving that local people can come together to make real change.

Our record speaks for itself:

  • We moved the motion at Council which created the Kingston Winter Fuel Payment, ensuring hundreds of older residents received £200 support last winter when others in power failed to act.

  • We forced the Council to scrap their plans to remove the Fountain Roundabout in New Malden - with a zebra crossing coming on the Kingston Road.

  • And we were the only group to propose a fully-funded rent freeze for social tenants — because no one should face an inflation-busting rent rise in a cost-of-living crisis.

Across Kingston, more and more people are stepping away from the establishment parties and towards something different: honest, local, independent representation that puts our community first.

If you share that vision, we’d love you to be part of it. Together, we can build a better, fairer, and more confident Kingston, for everyone who calls it home.
