Love Has No Borders
This group is to organize grassroots mutual aid and assistance for Syrian and other refugees.
Our governor wants to turn away refugees. Some of our fellow citizens are advocating the worst kinds of xenophobia and violence. But we know that love doesn't have borders or walls. We don't need to rely on government action. Refugees are welcome here. And we can organize our communities to provide assistance to these individuals and families fleeing violence and challenge the upsurge of xenophobia and violence in our country's discourse.
The vast majority of the world’s population, ourselves included, are exploited and oppressed by capitalism and the state. Xenophobia and militarism are common enemies as well. It is this recognition of common cause which allows for a culture of solidarity and mutual aid to emerge. We know that our wellbeing and liberation is intimately tied with that of “others”.
The way we operate is critical to subverting power imbalances and destabilizing the boundaries that keep us apart. Where possible, we therefore strive to work through the horizontal model of solidarity rather than the top down model of charity. We seek to create relationships of trust and respect where we challenge our own privileges, bridge the gap between ourselves and “others” and create partnerships with newly arrived individuals and families fleeing the explicit violence of war or the more obscured violence of our global economic system.
We believe that migration should not be a privilege of those fortunate to be born in wealthy countries, but instead, that all people should be free to migrate where they want regardless of their ethnicity or nationality. We express this through listening to and working with refugees in our community, responding to their self-determined needs and supporting individuals and organizations overseas who are struggling for justice, compassion, and humanity in regards to migration.
