March On Harrisburg

Philadelphia, PA

Who We Are:

We are a collection of citizens deeply concerned about the lack of trust between our government and We the People. We represent various ages, genders, races, religions, political orientations, sexual orientations, and socio-economic backgrounds, and we are committed to inclusive democracy. We are activists working both for democracy and for various causes ranging from ending mass incarceration in Pennsylvania to fighting climate change, and we know that fixing our political decision making process is the necessary first step in rising to meet our other challenges. We agree to not let our political differences keep us from acting on our moral similarities, we are not affiliated with and will not endorse any political candidate or party. We are Pennsylvania based, volunteer led, and have zero profit motive. We value persistent and loving nonviolence, fair inclusiveness, and inspired volunteerism.

Why We Are Doing This:

Democracy is broken in the United States, and we in Pennsylvania need to lead the way toward strengthening the relationship between citizen and government. The will of the people is separated from the law of the land. Our political system represents the few and the powerful, while the voices of everyday citizens have been drowned out by partisanship and special interests. In a recent Electoral Integrity Project report, Pennsylvania ranked 45th out of 50 states plus DC across 11 metrics of democracy.

What We Are Doing:

Our goal is to convince our State Legislature in Harrisburg to pass three bills that would:

  1. End Gerrymandering.

  2. Instate a Gift Ban.

  3. Create Automatic Voter Registration.

Our action plan has three phases:

  1. From now until May 13th, 2017, we are actively and persistently meeting with all 253 State Representatives and State Senators in Pennsylvania to ask for their support for our bills.

  2. From May 13th – May 21st, we will march 105 miles from Philadelphia to the State Capitol in Harrisburg.

From May 22nd – May 25th, we will perform strategic and creative acts of nonviolence in the State Capitol in Harrisburg to get our bills out of committee and to a vote.
