During the 1979-80 school year an organizing group of the AFT was chartered in Norfolk, VA. The newly founded local's goal for Norfolk educators and school employees was to create a professional organization that would be responsive to its members’ needs and concerns through advocacy. Today the Norfolk Federation of Teachers represent almost 1500 school related employees.
