Praxis Initiative
Praxis Initiative is a grassroots nonprofit led by directly impacted individuals transforming Arizona’s criminal legal system through lived experience and evidence-based reform. Originally founded as Arizonans for Transparency and Accountability in Corrections (ATAC), Praxis remains the only organization in Arizona dedicated to independent prison oversight and operated by formerly incarcerated people. We bring unmatched authenticity and urgency to our work, which includes legislative advocacy, watchdog efforts inside correctional facilities, and public education campaigns to promote transparency, accountability, and justice.
We’ve expanded our mission to include a broader range of holistic support programs that address the root causes and collateral consequences of incarceration. Our current work includes four core initiatives: (1) Independent Prison Oversight; (2) Criminal Legal System Reform; (3) Drug Policy and Overdose Prevention; and (4) Arts in Prison, and (5) Core Civics and Advocacy Training for returning citizens. Praxis is committed to public health, family preservation, and community-driven change, and ensuring pathways to freedom and return are wide and unobstructed. Our policy strategies are informed by firsthand experience and backed by rigorous research.
Every effort we undertake is driven by the belief that "those closest to the problem are also closest to the solution."* We invite you to join our movement by volunteering, donating, or advocating alongside us. Whether you're looking to change laws, support healing, or amplify the voices of the marginalized, there is a place for you at Praxis. Together, we’re building a more just, transparent, and humane future in Arizona -and beyond
