Reading for Berkeley

Berkeley, CA

We are on a mission to ensure that Berkeley fulfills the vision of a federal class-action literacy settlement, so that all students get effective reading instruction.

Reading for Berkeley is an initiative led by Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) parents, community members, and a coalition of local, state and nationwide groups, working to enable:

  • national and state-wide awareness,

  • local community oversight, and

  • district-level accountability

to take advantage of this opportunity to address the pervasive problem of how we teach kids to read—common to many schools in California and nationwide.

For too long we’ve ignored the biggest social justice issue in our schools — the huge gap between who can read and who cannot. We live in an information age. When we do not actively address this gap, we ensure our next generation is not ready for the world around them. We must act now.
