“This war is no excuse for neglecting the environment,” said so-called environmentalist and former Knesset member Alon Tal in reference to “Climate Resilience and Local Governmental Policy,” a conference he’s hosting May 29–30 at Stanford University. Framed as a conversation between Los Angeles and Tel Aviv, the conference brings together US and Israeli researchers and officials to discuss climate strategies for these “vibrant cultural and cosmopolitan centers characterized by significant demographic diversity.”
And yet, no mention of how Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza has rendered 12,000 hectares of the Strip’s arable land barren, reduced the amount of water available to an average Gazan to a mere 3 liters daily, and released millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide. No mention either of the Los Angeles where politicians slashed fire funding by over $17M, where 80% of soil samples collected downwind of burn scars contain unsafe lead levels, where a 75,000-person unhoused population stands to only grow as a result of state disinterest, neglect, and incompetence.
To Alon Tal we say: We have no interest in your “normal,” nor do the Stanford students currently on hunger strike, nor those charged with the crime of free speech, nor the millions the globe over who have refused complicity with those who have for now 19 months—and for 77 years before—made their contempt for human and nonhuman life all-too-clear.
To our public officials without whom this farce could not happen, including LA Mayor Karen Bass's office, the LA Board of Public Works, the LA County Board of Supervisors, the City of Palo Alto, and CAL FIRE: Stop normalizing genocide.
