The Department of Energy (DOE) announced in October of 2023 that $7 Billion of federal funding would be earmarked for seven "hydrogen hubs" across the nation utilizing the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Act of 2021.

This group is focused on and dedicated to stopping the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub (MACH2) which will have approximately 20 projects located in and across Southeastern Pennsylvania, South/Central New Jersey, and Delaware. Hydrogen is being messaged as the next big thing in clean energy. But digging deeper shows that is not entirely the case. Hydrogen gas is highly flammable and potentially explosive, very dangerous to handle, transport, and store, exposing the public to catastrophic risk should there be a release. Scientists have found that hydrogen itself is an indirect greenhouse gas that is 100 times more powerful than CO2 over a 10 year period.

The MACH2 hub is supposed to use nuclear energy ("pink") , wastewater ("orange"), and renewable sources of energy ("green") to produce hydrogen. And they are planning to employ the Steam Methane Reforming process to use so-called “Renewable Natural Gas” feedstock with carbon capture. MACH2 has $750M of public tax funding promised. But the funding has not been released yet for the MACH2 hub. The developers must meet certain requirements in the coming months before they receive funds and the “phased-in” process described by the DOE's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) has several review stages that could stop MACH2 from being funded.

A network of groups have formed to oppose MACH2 and as our campaign is carried out we invite all those interested to get involved. We are learning all we can about hydrogen and MACH2 and we share what we are learning in our MACH2 Exchange group. We also share opportunities for action as things develop.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTION:

Sign the Petition to Tell SEPTA to Halt Their Hydrogen Bus Proposal

The SEPTA public transit system in Philadelphia is barreling ahead with a hydrogen bus project that will put 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses on the streets of the city. This reckless and unprecedented transportation project puts people and our city at risk. Please sign the petition which we will deliver to SEPTA and City Hall.
