River Valley Organizing

Calcutta, OH

We are here to save a town that relies on well water to survive. We need your help to aid us in telling the EPA and local commissioners that it is not okay to put our livelihoods, our lives, our very existence in danger if the landfill and transfer station proposed for the West Point area is approved! West Point Renewables LLC has proposed and sought permits from the EPA to operate a landfill and transfer station near the town of West Point, Ohio. The land for the proposed landfill has tons of toxic fly ash buried on it, on land that is undermined by several marked and unmarked abandoned coal mines that run for miles, creating the possibility of water and ground pollution from the runoff from the fly ash that has been dumped there.  This poses a health hazard for all of the people in the runoff areas from this site. The landfill should not be approved, and we need your help!

There are several natural assets that could be impacted by the landfill if it is approved. Right now, there is a budding family of Bald Eagles residing just 1500 feet from the dumping location. The endangered Eastern Hellbender lives in Little Beaver Creek in a stretch named Hellbender’s Bluff preserve, which is near the proposed site for the landfill. Allowing West Point Renewables LLC to use the proposed site for a landfill will put both of these natural assets in jeopardy of contamination and will put the eagles in harm’s way. We need help – YOUR help – in opposing the approval of the landfill proposed for West Point Ohio!

The local area is part of the Appalachian area, with the clean natural environment providing the solitude of our existence, the solitude that we have enjoyed and protected to honor our heritage and livelihoods. Many of our friends and neighbors have sacrificed family birthdays and holidays by working long hours to provide a safe and clean area for our families and nature to thrive. Our local businesses are comprised of rodeo arenas, open grazing farms and family campgrounds, churches and barn wedding venues, most of which are family owned by people who rely on the outdoors to survive. But all of this, as well as the centuries old family legacy farms is threatened by the proposed landfill which is projected to begin construction by the end of 2023. Help us to save our homes, our families, and our dreams by helping us oppose the proposed landfill.

We are here to oppose a landfill that threatens a town that relies on well water to survive. A landfill that will take away the clean Appalachian solitude we have enjoyed and protected for generations as we provided for our families. A landfill that threatens our lives and livelihoods as we know them. We need your help to aid us in telling the EPA and local commissioners that it is not okay to lower our property values, poison our water sources, and run new and existing businesses off. Please help us by calling the EPA, your state representatives, and the county commissioners to let them know that the proposed landfill is not acceptable. Remember, what they do to us, they can do to you!
