We say "NO" to the West Point, Lisbon, Ohio Dump

Director of Ohio EPA- Anne M. Vogal - Columbiana County Commissioners- Mike Halleck, Tim Weigle and Roy Paparodis- State Representatives Bill Johnson, JD Vance, Sherrod Brown and Monica Robb Blasdel

The undersigned are a collective who oppose the implementation of the Madison Twp., West Point, Lisbon, Ohio Landfill. Vogal Holding, Inc., through its subsidiary West Point Renewables, LLC, plans to operate a landfill and transfer station in Madison Township. This landfill will fundamentally change the identity and character of our community by diminishing the quality of life for 3,200 people, lowering our home values, and contradicting the intended plan of its local residents’ vision for the community. These fundamental changes will NOT improve the lives or existence of the members of the community and will present potential hazards to our health, safety, and community. It is our expressed opinion that this landfill will negatively impact surrounding outdoor businesses, residents and waterways as a result of Vogal Holdings proven past violations including exceeding daily maximum capacity, failure to implement odor control plans, mismanagement of leachate, failure to maintain equipment, violations for improper storage of unapproved waste, transporting more than 500 containers of unapproved oil and gas residual waste, as well as numerous waste transportation violations discovered during waste hauler inspections. The increased traffic patterns could pose a serious issue with the local school bus stops, putting the lives of our children and other motorists at risk of possible great physical harm.  The increased traffic will cause excessive traffic and damage to the infrastructure, which will require additional investment of tax money to repair – tax money that is already in dire need in other areas. In addition, the landfill could have a negative impact on the balance of the local ecosystem and Little Beaver Creek. Little Beaver Creek houses 63 species of fish, 49 mammal species, 140 types of birds and 46 species of reptiles and amphibians - including Ohio's largest population of the endangered Eastern Hellbender. Hellbender Bluff and the parklands associated with it are near the property to be used for the landfill. The landfill proposed by West Point Renewables LLC will also threaten the ground water in the area. The citizens of West Point and the surrounding areas rely on wells as their main source of clean drinking water. The citizens have no interest in municipal water. In fact, many of our citizens cannot afford the costs associated with municipal water.

Our locally elected Board of Trustees has gone on the record, DISAPPROVING of the plans for the residential landfill. Your constituents are asking you, the Columbiana County Commissioners, state representatives, and other elected office-holders, to join us in our efforts to protect our livelihoods, our children, and our future by publicly condemning the landfill proposed by West Point Renewables, LLC. subsidiary of Vogal Holding, Inc. from coming into operation.

It is our opinion that approval of the landfill will undermine the established tax paying citizens and businesses in our area, resulting in an unwanted alteration to our daily operations. Due to the nature of a landfill and its operations, change could be needed in a minute-by-minute bases, based on weather conditions and environmental hazards. We in the community know that you, as our commissioners, are "for the people" type of elected officials. We ask that you imagine how this could alter lives - present and future – and to ask you to consider this from our perspective, if you could place yourself in our shoes. We thank you for your service to our and surrounding communities, and hopefully for your support in our efforts to oppose the operation of the landfill and transfer station proposed by West Point Renewables LLC, a subsidiary of Vogal Holding, Inc.
