XR Justice
XR Justice is an alliance of local members within Extinction Rebellion dedicated to centering climate justice and placing XR's visibility and resources in the service of long-standing environmental justice struggles led by frontline communities. XR Justice promotes and supports the work of centering justice in XR US actions and ideas/vision, and the need for the 4th demand. We believe that a social and ecological justice demand, such as the 4th demand adopted by XRUS, is absolutely essential to creating a movement which addresses the root causes of the climate crisis and seeks justice for the communities already experiencing the worst effects of environmental degradation.
The mainstream environmental movement has long replicated existing oppressive power structures such as patriarchy, classism, settler colonialism, and white supremacy. Unless we dedicate ourselves to actively dismantling these structures within the environmental movement, these frameworks will continue to sideline the very people who are most impacted by the climate crisis and who are doing the most to protect our planet and their communities. No climate/ecological movement can or will succeed without centering radical indigenous leadership, alliances and solidarity with people of color, poor people, and other marginalized communities. Justice at the heart of the movement isn’t optional or about optics. It's about what's right and what is effective, because the climate and ecological crisis is a justice crisis. The crisis exists because of injustice and the crisis won’t be solved without a just world.
We also seek to educate XR chapters around the world on the importance of environmental justice and the centrality of the XRUS 4th demand to our collective success by working to build coalitions with other XR groups worldwide who want to center justice. Part of this work is to uphold XR's key principles of autonomy and decentralized organizing. Enacting those principles means the local members of XRUS collectively decide what XR US DNA is and how we respond to the needs of our local chapters and communities. We reject the idea that XR UK and XR International should be allowed to impose a narrow vision of what XR DNA can be on a diverse and evolving global movement.
Our demands:
- The Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens.
- The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels.
- A national Citizen’s Assembly to oversee the changes, as part of creating a democracy fit for purpose.
- We demand a just transition that prioritizes the most vulnerable people and indigenous sovereignty; establishes reparations and remediation led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, people of color and poor communities for years of environmental injustice, establishes legal rights for ecosystems to thrive and regenerate in perpetuity, and repairs the effects of ongoing ecocide to prevent extinction of human and all species, in order to maintain a livable, just planet for all.
