Unemployed Worker Organizing Committee
DON'T STARVE, ORGANIZE!
Unemployed workers in Austin are coming together to get organized to stand up for our rights and dignity in the face of the worst economic collapse in modern U.S. history. We understand at the end of the day, if we aren't willing to join together to fight back ourselves, no one is going to come down and save us. Unemployed workers 100 years ago found themselves in similar circumstances and rather than starve, they got organized and won the Unemployment Insurance program that saved our nation from an even more catastrophic collapse since the start of the pandemic.
Being organized allows us to offer each other support and solidarity in the face of scary and uncertain times, and also allows us to exercise direct power to resist evictions, utility shut offs, repossessions and other attacks on the living standards and dignity of the millions of workers who have been forced out of work due to the irresponsibility of the nation's political and economic elite.
The UWOC believes that we need more than protests or activism; we need deep organizing that connects people from all backgrounds and walks of life who may never have seen themselves as an "activist" or "protester" before. This type of organizing is built on one-on-one conversations, not arguing or fighting. The focus is working to understand each other so we can find our common ground to fight together, to lift ourselves up by lifting up each other.
We are united around four Points of Unity:
Only when we take action ourselves - not waiting for someone to do it for us - can we unite together, organize ourselves for real strength, and take back control of our lives!
