Tell the House: Reject the Senate budget bill – we want NO CUTS to Medicaid and SNAP to pay for tax giveaways for billionaires and wealthy corporations!
The Senate has just passed a budget reconciliation bill that, if it is also passed by the House, will go down as one of the most reviled pieces of legislation in American history.
This legislation would shamefully take government-supported health care away from 17 million Americans and more than 500,000 Pennsylvanians.
All to give tax giveaways that would go overwhelmingly to the richest Americans, while also adding over $4 trillion to the national debt.
It's important to know that this is not a done deal. At the moment, they do not have the votes.
And we need to keep it that way.
This bill is so bad that it’s upsetting both those who care about deficits and those who care about Medicaid cuts.
Pennsylvania voters, like voters in other states, strongly support these programs and with good reason. Medicaid provides critical support for millions of Pennsylvanians.
In Pennsylvania, Medicaid provides health care to:
– more than 2 million adults.
– more than 1.4 million children (including 200,000 served by CHIP).
– more than 1.4 million people who need mental or behavioral health care.
– more than 400,000 seniors who receive care in nursing homes, assisted living facilities or at home.
– more than 300,000 Pennsylvanians with substance use disorder.
And more than 2 million Pennsylvanians rely on SNAP to pay for their groceries.
Cuts in Medicaid and CHIP spending of the kind being discussed in Washington, DC, could reduce federal support for the Pennsylvania budget by $2 billion to $5 billion each year. That would leave our state government with the difficult choice of trying to replace some of the federal dollars the state receives with money from Pennsylvania taxpayers or drastically reducing eligibility for Medicaid or coverage for medical care.
This is UNACCEPTABLE, and we need to stop it NOW!
Some Pennsylvania Republicans are pretending we can reduce costs without taking health care away from people.
We cannot do so.
They are calling for work requirements which sound good in theory. But almost everyone on Medicaid works or goes to school or takes care of a child or senior full time. Work requirements only save money by creating red tape that makes it hard for legitimate beneficiaries to receive it.
They are calling for "only" cutting the Medicaid Expansion. But it provides health care for 830,000 Pennsylvanians with low incomes and has done so for 2.5 million people in the last three years.
There is no way to cut Medicaid without harming hundreds of thousands of deserving Pennsylvanians. Our tax system already takes too much from working people, while allowing ultra-rich Americans and wealthy corporations to pay too little. The 2017 Trump tax plan gave the top 1% a $25,000 tax cut and the top .1% a $250,000 cut, while working people only got between $80 and $800. And those cuts did not create jobs, produce new investment or spur economic growth.
Join us by contacting your senator and congressperson to tell them NO CUTS to programs like Medicaid and SNAP, especially not to pay for tax giveaways for billionaires and wealthy corporations!
