Protect Medicaid, Protect Kids Health!

“I grew up personally in the foster care system, one of the most vulnerable populations in society. Because of my status, I have been eligible for Medi-Cal until the age of 26. This coverage has been my lifeline and any budget cuts would be devastating.

Our health is the most valuable thing we have. But right now, the health of our children, families and communities is under attack.

On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed the "Big, Ugly Bill," after the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate passed versions of the federal budget bill. This federal budget will make the deepest cuts to Medicaid in history. According to the California Budget and Policy Center’s analysis, “[t]hese cuts would increase poverty and hardship, widen race and ethnic inequities, and make it harder for workers to maintain their jobs in exchange for funding huge tax giveaways for the wealthy.” This “Big, Ugly Bill” extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts for the ultra wealthy; funds government kidnappings and family separations; puts in place racist and sexist bureaucratic red tape on cash aid programs; proposes harmful changes to Medicaid that would take away health care from millions of low-income Americans; and increases the debt limit by $5 trillion.

Medicaid, known as Medi-Cal in California, is an essential program that supports children’s health in California. That means access to affordable developmental screenings, vaccines, well-child visits and check-ups for illnesses. These services help set the stage for a child’s lifetime health. When children have health coverage, families have peace of mind.

Cuts to Medicaid’s budget at the federal level mean a lot less money going to states, including to California – where over five million children rely on Medi-Cal.

Tell your representatives in Congress to do everything they can to protect Medicaid.
