Action Needed: Help Move Two Recess Bills Supporting Oklahoma Kids
🚨 ADVOCATE ACTION ALERT 🚨
Recess supports focus, behavior, and classroom engagement.
Oklahoma students spend hours each day sitting in classrooms, but research and educators alike know that movement and unstructured play are essential to learning and healthy development.
Two bills now moving through the House would ensure students have time to move, reset, and return to the classroom ready to learn: SB1481 co-authored by Rep Caldwell (R-Enid) and SB2045 co-authored by Rep. Lowe (R-Chickasha). Both bills have unanimously passed the Senate committee and are up for committee votes any day.
We need your help encouraging House Reps in committees to support these measures and send them to the House floor.
What these bills do
SB1481 and SB2045 would require schools to provide 30-40 minutes (varies per bill) of daily recess time for elementary students, ensuring kids have a consistent opportunity to move, play, and recharge during the school day. These minutes can be broken into different segments of the day. These bills also strongly encourage districts to provide daily recess to students in grades six through twelve.
Why this matters
Recess is not a break from learning — it supports learning. Physical activity helps improve:
✅ focus and classroom behavior
✅ student mental health
✅ academic engagement
✅ overall physical health
Many Oklahoma schools already provide recess, but these bills ensure all students have access to this basic part of a healthy school day.
