Stop the Pedestrian Carnage in San Mateo

Recent pedestrian deaths in San Mateo
San Mateo Daily Journal

San Mateo residents,

We need your help in making our streets safe for those who walk. In the past months, too many pedestrians have died on San Mateo streets:

- In September 2024, a driver hit and killed San Mateo resident Yolanda Villar on Peninsula Avenue. Yolanda was a single mom of a special needs daughter,

- In November 2024, a driver hit and killed a pedestrian near the intersection of Hillsdale Boulevard and El Camino,

- In February 2025, a driver killed San Mateo resident Mark Kramer near the Fish Market.

- In January 2026, a driver killed 63-year-old Veronica Vasquez, a grandmother who did not own a car, on El Camino at 17th & Bovet

There is no reason for the City of San Mateo to see a pedestrian death every other month on its streets (in addition to numerous serious injuries). This does not seem to happen in other cities in the County.

By signing here, we will forward an email to the SM City Council and staff on your behalf. The Council has the power to make public safety the highest priority for the City.

Thank you for doing your part and stay tuned for more info,

Mike Swire
