Everyone should be able to walk, bike, take transit, and get around our neighborhoods safely.

We support Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth’s effort to lower the speed limit on residential streets in the 48th Ward from 25 mph to 20 mph. Lower speeds can reduce both the likelihood and severity of crashes, and this change should be part of a broader effort to make our streets safer.

But lower speed limits alone aren’t enough. We also need sustained investment in infrastructure that makes safe driving intuitive and creates streets that work better for people walking, biking, taking transit, and using public space.

And we shouldn’t stop with residential streets. Our arterial streets are where people face the greatest danger from traffic crashes. Making these streets safer will require lower speeds, safer street design, and infrastructure investment — as well as coordination between the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois, and IDOT where the state has jurisdiction.
