Request For Public Hearing Regarding Alterra Energy Permit Renewal

Alterra Energy at 1200 E Waterloo Road has been operational for 12 years and is attempting to renew their operating permit with the EPA. Their practice of pyrolysis is green washed as "recycling" plastics into oil. This process is incredibly noxious and dangerous to the local environment and the people in it. This facility has been failing their emissions tests by exceeding what they are currently permitted to pollute and polluting chemicals that they have not been permitted to pollute. Many of these pollutants are known to have significant negative effects on people's health- ranging from skin and eye irritation to cancer and respiratory, pulmonary, reproductive, and neurological issues. This facility operates right across the street from a HeadStart preschool (1205 E Waterloo Road) and 1 mile away from a historically redlined neighborhood. Alterra Energy plans to license the pyrolysis process they use to other companies, potentially spreading this hazardous technology to other communities across the country. If they are not effectively regulated, many more people are subject to be exposed to this volatile process.
