Action Alert: Protect patients rights against involuntary electroconvulsive therapy
URGENT ACTION NEEDED:
The Public Health Committee will vote on S.B. 898, An Act Eliminating The Requirement That The Probate Court Issue An Order Allowing A Patient Who Is Incapable Of Giving Informed Consent To Receive Shock Therapy.
The bill would extend the period of a court order allowing a facility to force ECT on someone from 45 to 90 days.
IF YOU OPPOSE FORCED TREATMENT: Write to your legislators and the Leaders of the Public Health Committee about why this bill is a bad idea.
When writing to them, you can mention:
- Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) has been shown to cause harmful side effects, including permanent brain damage and memory loss.
- This bill is about forcing people who cannot consent to treatment to receive Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). It would extend the amount of time that a facility can give someone ECT against their will from 45 to 90 days.
- The current 45 day time limit serves as a safeguard against long-term ECT treatments that are against a person's will.
- If anything, we need more protections against involuntary treatment, not fewer.
Write to the Public Health Committee leadership and YOUR legislators telling them why S.B. 898 is harmful! Fill out the form to the right and click "START WRITING"
