The closure of Indian Point in 2021 resulted in the loss of nearly one-third of the Hendrick Hudson School District's annual operating revenue. We are deeply appreciative of the leadership shown by our NYS elected officials, Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblymember Dana Levenberg, in sponsoring and passing S9617A and A10949 on June 5th. These bills extend funding to our community, and others like us, for five additional years through the NYS Electric Generation Facility Cessation Mitigation Program.

Now we need Governor Hochul to sign these bills into law!

Background Information

• Under the current law, the last year the Hendrick Hudson School District, Village of Buchanan, the Town of Cortlandt, and Westchester County will be eligible for funds from this program is the 2027-2028 school year—just one school year away.

• The Cessation Mitigation Program has helped the school district and local municipalities avoid a huge spike in property taxes after the closure of Indian Point, but our eligibility for payments from this fund are reduced each year.

• S9617A and A10949 would allow the Hendrick Hudson School District to receive $4M each year from 2028-29 to 2032-33.

• The fund was never intended to be a permanent solution, but extending it for a few more years and increasing the total amount our community (and others like us) are eligible to receive will provide much needed support.

• Delays in decommissioning have prolonged the timeline for the release of the property for redevelopment and thus delayed potential new tax revenue that would benefit us and alleviate some of our financial burden.
