As Your Constituent, I Urge You to Oppose This Cruel and Harmful Bill

Dear Representative,
As your constituent, I am writing to express my deep opposition to H.R. 1 that would devastate families, immigrants, and low-income communities. This bill is not just harmful—it is cruel, unjust, and a direct attack on the most vulnerable people in our country.
If passed, this bill would:
-
Cut off access to healthcare and nutrition programs like Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, CHIP, and the ACA for working-class communities.
-
Fund a massive expansion of detention and deportation, including a 1300% increase to ICE’s detention budget, and billions toward militarizing the border.
-
Impose harsh, non-waivable fees on humanitarian applications like asylum, TPS, SIJS, and work permits—and charge families $3,500 or more just to reunite with their children.
-
Authorize the military to detain immigrants and build immigration jails on Department of Defense property.
-
Eliminate child welfare protections and allow invasive and dehumanizing searches of children in federal custody.
-
Strip the Child Tax Credit from over 2.6 million U.S. citizen children, simply because one or both of their parents are immigrants.
This is not the direction we need to go. At a time when families are struggling with healthcare costs, hunger, housing, and climate disasters, this bill chooses to divest from care and double down on cages, surveillance, and punishment.
I’m asking you—not just as a policymaker, but as someone accountable to your community—to vote NO on this legislation. We need you to fight for policies that invest in our well-being, not in cages and weapons.
Invest in our communities. Do not divest from us.
