Ask City Leaders to Act Now to Pursue Expanding San Francisco’s Speed Camera Program

Dangerous speeding is the #1 cause of severe and fatal crashes in San Francisco – and every solution possible is needed to address this.

San Francisco’s speed camera pilot program, launched in the spring of 2025, has proven highly effective at changing driver behavior at speed camera locations. The latest speed camera data shows:

  • The share of drivers speeding 10 MPH or more above the speed limit is down 84% across camera locations.
  • Two-thirds of vehicle owners who received a warning or citation did not get another one.

This is an incredible success story for safer streets that we need to build on. But the state law allowing San Francisco to use speed cameras is limited to just 33 locations, a far cry from what’s needed given how rampant dangerous speeding is.

City leaders, including Mayor Lurie and the Board of Supervisors, have committed to expand the use of automated safety technology in San Francisco. Now, we need them to act by pursuing state legislation allowing San Francisco to expand and make permanent our speed camera program.
