Ask Governor Moore to Fully Implement the Maryland Environmental Policy Act (MEPA)

Fifty years is too long to wait. Ask Governor Moore to fully implement the Maryland Environmental Policy Act of 1973 (MEPA).

The Maryland Environmental Policy Act of 1973 (MEPA) is composed of two essential elements:

  1. The assertion that “each person has a fundamental and inalienable right to a healthful environment”.

  2. That all State agencies must “identify, develop, and adopt methods and procedures that will” implement that right.

The full implementation of the Maryland Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) would guide the State administration’s actions on behalf of the health of our Chesapeake Bay watershed, our communities, our economy and our climate. It would ensure that the State’s environmental actions would promote environmental equity.

Unfortunately to date, the Maryland Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) has been all but ignored. Nearly all State agencies have yet to develop and adopt methods and procedures that will implement this fundamental right.

The inaction of most State agencies has allowed the prioritization of private interests over the health of our people, our communities and our environment.

Write Governor Moore and ask that he direct all State agencies to correct this oversight immediately, and fully implement the Maryland Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) on its fiftieth anniversary.
